Facts

General

  • St. Thomas More School officially opened on September 19, 1960 with Grades 1 - 5. One new grade was added each year thereafter until the school reached the capacity of eight grades.
  • Groundbreaking for the new wing which includes Kindergarten, Pre-School, Learning Resource Center, Faculty Lounge and Meeting Rooms, took place April 13, 1992
  • We are currently celebrating 50+ years of academic excellence!

Facilities

  • St. Thomas More School has 10 classrooms, a learning center, computer lab, art room, three multi-purpose rooms, gymnasium and kitchen facilities which provide a supplemental lunch program.
  • The school building is utilized for many activities including Religious Education Classes, Athletics, parish meetings, Cub Scouts, , Prayer Groups, etc.
  • The After Care Program is available to STM PK-8 students daily from 2:30-6:30 PM.

  • 194 students -- 3 & 4 year old preschool through eighth grade

  • St. Thomas More teaches a diverse group of students from STM Parish and many surrounding neighborhood towns and parishes.

Religious Affiliation

Curriculum

  • St. Thomas More School follows the Diocese of Rockford guidelines for our academic curriculum -- Religion, Math, Reading/Literature, Phonics/Spelling/Vocabulary, English grammar and composition, Science, and Social Studies/History. We also offer library, music, band, physical education, art, technology and after-school enrichment classes. STM staff implement the Diocesan Standards infused with mastery level Common Core State Standards for curriculum, lesson planning, and assessments.
    Students have religion classes on a daily basis and attend a weekly parish mass in which Grades 3-8 serve as readers, singers, and prayer leaders. Grade two students receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist.
  • We offer a full day Kindergarten 8-2:40 PM
  • 3 year old preschool -- Tuesday & Thursday 8:00-10:30 AM
  • 4 year old preschool -- Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday 12-2:30 PM
    Full day school hours for Grades 1-8 are 8:00am -3:00pm.

Test Scores

  • St. Thomas More students, Grades 2-7, take the ITBS and Cognitive Abilities Tests each Fall. These tests evaluate Reading, Language, Math, Social Studies, Science and Sources of Information. Student evaluation is based on knowledge learned prior to their current grade level. Traditionally, St. Thomas More students score 1 1/2 to 2 grade equivalences above their grade levels. We feel confident that our students are exceptionally prepared for their academic futures.
